We are trying very hard not to lose our family home, but with the combination of the high cost and expense of caring for an invalid...

  • medical bills
  • prescriptions
  • supplies

    and the economy...

  • being out of work
  • the job market
  • housing market

...It has become quite the struggle and we're losing the battle.

In the fall of 2001, not long after the tragedy of 9/11, the Busch family experienced a tragedy as well, which has left them devastated. For a week in October, Pat, a 50 year old house wife and mom, had complained of a severe headache. She went to an emergency room and was told she had a virus. After a follow-up and another week of not feeling any better, the family decided to take her for a second opinion at another hospital.

There, a brain aneurysm was discovered as Pat nearly died in the examination area. During emergency surgery, she had a procedure known as coiling, where a thin metal coil is inserted in the brain to repair the aneurysm, but during the procedure she experienced a major stroke which caused brain damage resulting in permanent paralysis. The entire left side of her body is now paralyzed, a condition known as hemiplegia. Pat is now bedridden, incontinent, and unable to walk or even sit up on her own.

Patty spent months in the hospital and then a year in a nursing home for physical therapy and rehabilitation. Followed up by several more years of weekly hospital visits for continued physical therapy. Not wanting to commit her to a Nursing Home the family decided to bring Patty home. After 30+ years of marriage Ed & Pat did not want to be seperated, "For Better or Worse, In Sickness and In Health'..... Everyday now, for the past eight years, 7 days a week, the family cares for all of her needs, taking on new roles, duties, and developing routines to give Pat the care and love she needs.

Before this happened to her, Patty was "the center of our family's universe, our nucleus". "We all depended on and revolved around her in our daily lives. As the Wife, Mother, Daughter, Daughter-in-Law, Mother-in-Law, and Grandmother (Nana) she always took care of us all, and now is unable to care for herself ".

"We remain dedicated and committed to continue doing whatever it takes in keeping Patty at the "center of our universe" albeit in a much different role".

During their entire marriage Ed always felt he could "fix & deal" with any problem that arose. But this is the one time he could not "fix" it. Pat's condition is permanent and cannot be fixed, and they are left only to "deal" with it.

Patty's husband, Ed, resigned several years ago as President of the company he co-founded, and along with their son Eddie, is her primary care-giver. Ed being unemployed and having exhausted most of their life savings, is seeking a way to be able to work from home (or close to home) so that he can continue to care for his wife while earning a living. Given the current economic climate this is proving to be quite a challenge. For any interested party looking for a dedicated, hard-working, self motivated individual, Ed's resume can be made available upon request.
